Proud Moment! There are More Professors Who are Teaching in the Agroecotechnology Program!

On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, an open meeting for the inauguration of Professors was held at the Gedung Serba Guna (GSG) of UNIB. The ceremony was conducted by Dr. Retno Agustina Ekaputri, S.E., M.Sc, the Rector, accompanied by the Chairman of the University Senate, Prof. Safnil, M.A., Ph.D, and other members of the senate. The event was attended by dozens of invited guests.

Four (4) professors were appointed during the inauguration ceremony, 3 from the Faculty of Agriculture and 1 from the Faculty of Law. The four newly appointed professors are Prof. Ir. Fahrurrozi, M.Sc, Ph.D, Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Faiz Barchia, M.Sc, Prof. Heri Dwi Putranto, S.Pt, M.Sc, Ph.D, and Prof. Dr. Candra Irawan, SH, M.Hum.

Out of the four chosen professors, two are lecturers who lecture in the study program of Agroecotechnology. They are Prof. Ir. Fahrurrozi, M.Sc, Ph.D, and Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Faiz Barchia, M.Sc.

Let’s get to know our Professors better!

Prof. Ir. Fahrurrozi, M.Sc, Ph.D (Professor of Horticulture Science)

Born in Curup in 1964, he is the son of Mr. H. A. Aziz Wahab, BA, and the late Mrs. Hj. Yuliana. His wife’s name is Meliniyanti, S.P, and they have two sons named Fahri Razaly Aziz, S.Sos, and Fikri Maulana Aziz. Prof. Fahrurrozi completed his formal education at SDN 2 Teladan Curup, Rejang Lebong – Bengkulu for elementary school, SMPN 1 Kota Bengkulu for junior high school, and SMAN 2 Kota Bengkulu for senior high school, graduating in 1983. He then obtained his Bachelor’s degree (Ir) from the Faculty of Agriculture, Bengkulu University (graduating in 1988), as well as his Master of Science (M.Sc) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees from the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Science, both at McGill University in Montreal, Canada (both graduating in 1994 and 2000).

Prof. Fahrurrozi teaches several courses in the undergraduate (S1) and postgraduate (S2 and S3) programs at the Faculty of Agriculture, UNIB. These courses include Horticultural Crop Production Technology, Fundamentals of Agronomy, Introduction to Agricultural Science, Sustainable Agricultural Systems, Plant Ecophysiology, and Crop Production on Marginal Lands. Prof. Fahrurrozi has published about 76 research articles in journals with national and international recognition over the previous ten years. Among these 76 research papers, three of the most recent ones are titled: “Agronomic Responses of Sweet Corn – Peanut Intercropping to Liquid Organic Fertilizer Grown in Different Dosages of Vermicompost”; Identification of Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Ethnic Fermented Bamboo Shoot “Lemea” in Bengkulu, Indonesia; and Growth and Yield Responses of Black Soybean to Bioactivator-Enriched Goat Manures Amended with Trichoderma”.

Prof. Fahrurrozi has also created 20 research titles and 15 titles about community service over the previous ten years. His most recent studies include “Study on the Development of Liquid Organic Fertilizer Based on Moringa Leaves and Seaweed for Sweet Potato Production in Coastal Areas,” “Utilization of Waste from Slaughterhouses in the Development of Solid Organic Fertilizer Based on Goat Manure for Organic Vegetable Production in Coastal Areas,” and “Efficacy and Consistency Test of Liquid Organic Fertilizer Based on Local Resources for Vegetable Production in Closed Agricultural Systems.” Additionally, three of his most recent community service activities are: “Simple Hydroponic Leafy Vegetable Production with Self-Formulated Nutrients Sourced from POC (Plant Organics Concentrate) and Compound Fertilizer in Rawa Makmur Permai Village, Muara Bangkahulu District, Bengkulu City,” “Member of the Regional Carbon Council and Expert Team for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) in Bengkulu Province,” and “Strengthening Farmer Groups Based on Horticultural Production and Agrotourism in Mojorejo Village, Selupu Rejang District, Rejang Lebong Regency.”

Prof. Fahrurrozi also has experience as a presenter, co-author, and organizer of scientific meetings at both national and international levels. He is also a Reviewer for accredited Scopus journals, including the Journal of Agriculture and Food Research (https://www.sciencedirect.com), HELIYON (https://www.cell.com/heliyon/home), NJAS – Wageningen Journal of Life Sciences (https://www.journals.elsevier.com), and the Journal of Agriculture and Food Research (https://www.journals.elsevier.com). In addition, throughout his service, Prof. Fahrurrozi has obtained Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), namely Plant Variety Protection Rights for CHR17 Chili (PVT in 2020), Plant Variety Registration for CH73 Chili at UNIB (TDVT in 2015), and Dual-use UNIB Chili Plant Varieties Registration (TDVT in 2015).

Prof. Fahrurrozi has authored books both collaboratively and individually, including:

  1. “Land Productivity in Closed Agricultural Systems” (Book Chapter) published in 2023.
  2. “Liquid Organic Fertilizer for Vegetable Production in Closed Agricultural Systems” published in 2022.
  3. “PLASTICULTURE: The Use of Plastic Mulch for Vegetable Crop Production” published in 2018.

In addition to his academic and scientific works, Prof. Fahrurrozi has a wealth of experience as a member and officer in professional organizations and has held several important positions in university management (UNIB). In professional organizations, he is currently listed as a member of the Association of Agricultural Technology in Southeast Asia (AATSEA), a member of Perhimpunan Agroekoteknologi Indonesia (PAGI), a member of Anggota Perhimpunan Agronomi Indonesia (Peragi) Bengkulu, a member of the Indonesian Horticulture Association – Bengkulu Chapter, a member of the Indonesian Horticulture Association, a member of the American Society for Horticultural Sciences from 1993-1995/1999-2001, and a member of Masyarakat Petani dan Pertanian Organik Indonesia (Maporina).

In University management at UNIB, Prof. Fahrurrozi currently serves as the Head of the Doctoral Program in Agricultural Sciences. He has also held several important administrative positions in the past, including:

  1. Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture (2016-2020)
  2. Vice Rector for Academic Affairs (2005-2013)
  3. Acting Vice Rector for Student Affairs (2012-2013)
  4. Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program (2005-2009)
  5. Coordinator of the Engineering Program (2005-2007)
  6. Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at the Faculty of Agriculture (2004-2005)
  7. Head of the Department of Crop Cultivation and Agronomy Program Coordinator at the Faculty of Agriculture (2001-2003).

Prof. Fahrurrozi has also been entrusted with managing various supporting units within the university, such as:

  1. Director of the Project Management Unit (PMU) for SFD LOAN Establishment of the University Hospital at Universitas Bengkulu (2020-2021).
  2. Country Representative for the Regional Network on Poverty Eradication (RENPER) (2013-2021).
  3. Head of the Team for the Proposal Development of the UNIB Teaching Hospital (2015-2019).
  4. Member of the Faculty of Agriculture Senate (2016-2020).
  5. Member of the Universitas Bengkulu Senate (2016-2020 & 2005-2013).
  6. Director of the Higher Education Institution’s Internal Quality Assurance Unit (LPIU) for the Higher Education for Agriculture and Environment Development Project (HPEQ) (2011-2013).
  7. Director of the Higher Education Institution’s Internal Quality Assurance Unit (LPIU) for the IU-IMHERE Project (2006-2012).
  8. Director of the Higher Education Institution’s Internal Quality Assurance Unit (LPIU) for the DUElike PGSD Project (2006-2008).
  9. Assistant Director for Academic Affairs, DUE Project LPIU (2001-2002).
  10. Coordinator of the Internal Monitoring and Evaluation Team for the Higher Education Development Grants (Blockgrants) (2006-2013).

For his dedication and service, Prof. Fahrurrozi has received awards such as the Outstanding Leader Award 2022, in the category of “Research and Development” from the President of AATSEA (Association of Agricultural Technology in Southeast Asia), and the Satya Lencana Karya Satya 20-year award from the President of the Republic of Indonesia.


Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Faiz Barchia, M.Sc. (Professor of Soil Science)

Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Faiz Barchia, M.Sc, was born in Sri Tanjung in 1959. He is the son of the late H. Barchia Idris and the late Hj. Fatimah binti Abdullah. He is married to Dr. Dra. Ria Ariesta, M.Pd, and they have three children: dr. Ummi Kaltsum, dr. Aulia Ulfah, and Fawwaz Saifani Muhammad, ST.

His formal education includes:

  • Elementary School (SD) at SDN Sri Tanjung (graduated in 1971)
  • Junior High School (SMP) at SMP Swasta Sri Tanjung (graduated in 1974)
  • Senior High School (SMA) at SMAN Teluk Betung (graduated in 1977)
  • Bachelor’s degree (S1) from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sriwijaya (UNSRI) Palembang (graduated in 1985)
  • Master’s degree (S2) from the University of Sydney (graduated in 1995)
  • Doctoral degree (S3) from the Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) (graduated in 2002).

In addition to his formal education, he has also attended training on “Innovation Systems and Science Park Management” and “Entrepreneurship and Science Park Development” in Sweden-Denmark in 2015 and 2016. As a lecturer in the undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the Faculty of Agriculture, UNIB, Prof. Muhammad Faiz Barchia teaches several courses, including: Soil Science Fundamentals; Fertility and Fertilization; Soil Ecology; Bioremediation; Land Degradation and Restoration; Soil and Water Conservation; Watershed Management; Indonesian Soil Geography; Geomorphology and Landscape Analysis; Waste Management; Natural Resources and Environmental Management; and Agricultural Resource Conservation.

In addition to teaching, Prof. Muhammad Faiz Barchia is actively involved in research and community service. Some of the research titles he has produced in the last five years include:

  1. “Analysis of Irrigated Rice Sustainability in Bengkulu.”
  2. “Characteristics, Amelioration, Land Use Changes, and Sustainability of Rice Cultivation on Peatlands in Mukomuko.”
  3. “Soil Nutrient Availability and Nutrient Uptake in Relation to Rice Yield in Peat Swamp.”
  4. “Evaluation of Land, Cultivation, and Development Strategy of Shallot Production Center in Cawang Kidau Irrigation Area, Kaur Regency.”

Moreover, his community service experiences in the last five years include:

  1. Chairman of the Regional Research Council of Central Bengkulu Regency (2019-2023).
  2. Expert Member for the Acceleration of Development in Kaur Regency (2022, 2023).
  3. Expert for the Drafting of the Provincial Regulation on Local Action Plans for the Reduction and Elimination of Mercury (2022).
  4. Expert for the Drafting of the Regional Regulation on the Industrial Development Plan of Bengkulu Province (2019).
  5. Expert in the Preparation of Environmental Carrying Capacity and Load Capacity (DDDTLH) for Central Bengkulu Regency (2019).
  6. Expert in the Preparation of Environmental Carrying Capacity and Load Capacity (DDDTLH) for Kepahiang Regency (2019).
  7. Expert in the Regional National Craft Council of Bengkulu Province (2021-2024).

In the field of scientific writing, in the last five years, Prof. Muhammad Faiz Barchia has produced 25 titles of international publications, either as a sole author or in collaboration with others. Some of these publications are as follows:

These publications showcase his valuable contributions to the scientific community and demonstrate his dedication to advancing knowledge and understanding in various areas of expertise.

During his career, Prof. Muhammad Faiz Barchia has obtained three Copyrights, with the following themes: “Landuse Map (2000) Air Manjuto Area” (in 2021), “Landuse Map (2019) Air Manjuto Area” (in 2021), and “Poster Pemanfaatan Serbuk Gergaji Sebagai Media Tumbuh Jamur Tiram di Kelurahan Beringin Raya” (in 2022).

In the management of the university, Prof. Muhammad Faiz Barchia has had experience as follows: Secretary of the Community Service and Training Development Institute (Bapel KKN LPPM UNIB) (1996-1998), Chairman of the Community Service and Training Development Institute (P3KKN LPPM UNIB) (2004-2006), and Head of the Business and Technology Incubator Development Center (Pusat Pengembangan Inkubator Bisnis dan Teknologi LPPM UNIB) (2001, 2002, 2003).
