Avocado centers are located in several areas in Indonesia, one of which is Probolinggo. Probolinggo has long been known as a center for avocados. Probolinggo avocado is famous and spread in various markets in the country.

"Based on 2018 district data, currently there are 262,395 mature trees with a total production of 211,207 quintals and a productivity of 80.49 kg per tree," said Head of Horticulture Division of the Probolinggo Regency Agriculture Office, Yulis Setyaningsih.

Yulis explained that Ranu Gedang Village, Tiris District, with its various advantages and suitable agro-climate for avocado growth, made it the main center for avocados in Probolinggo Regency.

One of the farmer groups that has been cultivating avocados from year to year is Joko Tarup III. There are three regional superior varieties, namely Mentera, Rengganis and Butter. Each variety has characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.

The Mentera (red butter) variety has reddish skin characteristics when the tree is ripe (old) and has a slightly rough sweet taste. Thick flesh with small seeds and skin that easily peels off making it easier to peel if eaten directly. The weakness of Mentera is that it is not durable or less than 2 weeks for 80 percent maturity.

The Rengganis variety has a yellowish green skin color and a sharp shape. The flesh is thick and tastes sweet. The level of fruit size is uniform (400 – 600 grams) and durable or up to 2 weeks for 80 percent ripeness. The weakness of Rengganis is that it is a bit runny and peeling the skin is not as easy as Mentera.

“Meanwhile, Butter has the characteristics that the skin will be yellow when it is old, has a rough taste (punel) but is not too sweet. Butter avocado is the only avocado that has not been released, but its quality is not inferior to other avocados,” explained Yulis.

Puji, treasurer of the Joko Tarup III Farmers Group said that avocado plants have been developed for a long time, even now there are avocado trees that are 25 years old.

“The productivity can reach 3-5 quintals per tree. Marketing is aimed at markets outside the city including Jakarta and Surabaya as well as local markets, with the selling price for super quality (1 kg containing 2-3 avocados) IDR 13-16 thousand, standard quality (1 kg containing 4 avocados) IDR 10 thousand and local quality (1 kg contains 5 pieces) is sold at a price of Rp. 5 thousand, “explained Puji.

Mulyono, PPL Coordinator in Tiris Sub-district, explained that farmers in his area are advanced farmers who continue to try to improve their farming business. There are thousands of existing and producing avocado trees with a very wide development potential or from 10 thousand stems.

"Farmers are also motivated to develop avocados, which previously had faded and were reduced due to the fusarium pest, which caused avocado plants to die," he added.

In fact, said Mulyono, farmers are currently very inspired to turn their village into an organic avocado village. Organic treatment has been applied by farmers since 2014 until now, using organic materials such as organic fertilizers and pesticides.

"However, farmers need support and assistance in avocado development and marketing considering that avocado farming is more promising than other commodities such as sengon wood which is currently being developed," explained Mulyono.

Seeing the very promising potential of Probolinggo avocados, Sri Wijayanti Yusuf, Acting Director of Fruits and Floriculture, hopes that although the Ministry of Agriculture has not yet focused on developing avocados, farmers can develop them independently or supported by the APBD.

"The development of the avocado area through APBN funds has been carried out from 2011 to 2015 with a total development area of 890 hectares in several production center areas such as Central Aceh District, Bener Meriah, Garut, Semarang, Jember, Pasuruan, Probolinggo, Lumajang, Blitar and Central Lampung," he explained.

Currently, avocados do not only meet domestic needs, but there have been many requests from other countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, China and Middle Eastern countries. Even now, the Japanese market requires a supply of fresh avocados from Indonesia of 5 containers per week.

Yanti added that based on BPS data, avocado exports in 2018 were more than 205 tons or Rp. 2.4 billion. This figure shows an increase of 89 percent when compared to the previous year which only reached 108 tons with a value of Rp 991 million.

“The increase in avocado export volume is supported by increased production and quality. In 2018, BPS figures show avocado production of 410 tons with a harvested area of 23,955 hectares. This has increased by 12.94 percent compared to the previous year, “explained Yanti.

Yanti is optimistic that if the government and farmers develop avocados by cultivating according to GAP/SOP rules and are environmentally friendly from on farm to off farm, it is very possible if in the future Indonesia is able to supply the demands of countries such as Japan and Europe.
