Compost Harvesting from Dry Leaf Litter at the Forestry Department, University of Bengkulu
Bengkulu, November 14, 2025 — The Department of Forestry, University of Bengkulu, conducted a compost harvesting activity from dry leaf litter in the department’s nursery area. This activity involved junior lecturers from the Department of Forestry and students from the Environmental Science and Forestry Study Program as part of a practical learning program related to organic waste management and soil conservation. The harvested compost resulted from the decomposition of dry leaf litter collected from the campus area and processed using a simple, environmentally friendly composting method. The composting process, which took several months, produced mature compost that was ready to be used as a planting medium or organic fertilizer to support nursery and reforestation activities.

During this activity, students received firsthand explanations about the importance of biomass management and the use of leaf litter as a natural nutrient source. Junior lecturers from the Department of Forestry provided guidance on material sorting techniques, the decomposition process, measuring compost maturity, and appropriate application methods in the field. This compost harvesting activity not only strengthened students’ technical skills in organic waste management but also demonstrated the department’s commitment to implementing sustainability principles. Furthermore, this activity supports the campus’ efforts towards greener environmental management through the reuse of abundant biomass on campus.
