Training the Tanjung Dalam Village Community in Making Simple Water Filters Using Natural Materials

North Bengkulu, October 18, 2025—Lecturers from the Forestry Department (Forestry and Environmental Science Study Program), Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu, conducted a Community Service activity with the theme “Training on Making Simple Water Filters Based on Natural Materials as a Solution to Clean Water Availability for the Community of Tanjung Dalam Village, Ulok Kupai District, North Bengkulu Regency.” This activity was held at the OMAH IJO Self-Help Agricultural and Rural Training Center (P4S) and was attended by residents of Tanjung Dalam Village, who have faced challenges in obtaining clean water, especially during the dry season.
Through this activity, a team of lecturers provided training on how to make simple water filters using natural materials easily found in the surrounding area, such as activated charcoal, fine sand, gravel, palm fiber, and zeolite stone.
The head of the community service team, Mela Faradika, S.Si., M.Si., stated that this activity aims to increase the community’s capacity to independently provide clean water. “Clean water is a very important basic need, but not everyone has easy access to it. By utilizing natural materials, people can make simple water filters that are effective, affordable, and environmentally friendly,” said Mela Faradika, S.Si., M.Si.

In the training, participants were guided directly in assembling a simple household water filter, from arranging the layers of filter material to maintaining it to ensure optimal filtration results. The community service team also explained the function of each layer of material and the working principles of natural water filtration.
The community demonstrated high enthusiasm throughout the activity. They actively participated in practical exercises and discussions on how to apply water filters in their homes.
One participant expressed that this activity provided real benefits to the village community. “We’ve had difficulty getting clean water, especially during the dry season. After participating in this training, we now know how to make our own filters using readily available materials,” said one of the participants.
Through this activity, the University of Bengkulu hopes to encourage community independence in addressing clean water issues and raise awareness of the importance of wise and sustainable natural resource management.
