On Saturday, September 20, 2025, a community service activity was held by the University of Bengkulu with the topic “Transformation of Coffee Skin Waste into Nutritious Fermented Feed: Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Farming” in Tapak Gedung Village, Tebat Karai District, Kepahiang Regency.
This activity was led by Ika Gusriani, S.TP., M.P, with team members Suci Rahmawati, S.Farm., Apt. (D3 Pharmacy), Anita Marianata, S.I.A., M.Si (Public Administration), and Wica Elvina, S.TP., M.Si (Agricultural Industrial Technology), and students. The partners of the activity are the coffee farmer community and breeders of Tapak Gedung Village.
The program is carried out through the stages of survey, socialization, coffee skin fermentation training, trial production, business management assistance, to monitoring and evaluation. Simple fermentation technology by utilizing local microbes (e.g. EM4 or Lactobacillus spp.) was introduced to process coffee peel waste into alternative feed with high nutritional value.
Through this activity, the community gained new knowledge about waste utilization as well as solutions to overcome the high cost of animal feed. This program also targets the formation of village-based micro business groups, as well as producing outputs in the form of scientific articles, documentation videos, and pocket book copyrights. This activity shows the synergy between universities and the community in supporting sustainable development, especially the integration of the coffee and livestock sectors in Kepahiang Regency.
