Bengkulu, October 2025 – The Agroecotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu, successfully carried out a Community Service Program titled “Community Empowerment in Harapan Village through Household Waste Management Based on 9R Principles to Produce Liquid Organic Fertilizer in Support of Low-Carbon Development Policies.”
The program was conducted in Harapan Village, Central Bengkulu Regency, led by Ela Hasri Windari, S.Si., M.Sc. The implementing team consisted of three lecturers — Prof. Dr. Ir. Promoting Sustainable Waste Management and Green Agriculture
This community service aimed to raise awareness and skills among local residents in managing household waste to generate both economic and environmental value. Using the 9R principles — Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replace, Replant, Refill, Repair, and Redesign — the program encouraged the community to adopt more sustainable waste management practices aligned with low-carbon development goals.
Program Implementation
The activities were carried out in three main stages:
-
Socialization and education, introducing the 9R concept, its relevance to composting, and methods for producing and applying liquid organic fertilizer (LOF).
-
Hands-on demonstration of LOF production using household organic waste such as vegetable and fruit residues.
-
Practical application of the fertilizer on plants to showcase its benefits and proper usage techniques.
Active Community Participation
The residents of Harapan Village showed great enthusiasm throughout the activities. They participated actively in discussions and hands-on sessions to learn how to produce liquid organic fertilizer.
Project leader Ela Hasri Windari expressed hope that this initiative would serve as an initial step in building public awareness of sustainable waste management:
“Through this program, we hope the community can transform household waste into valuable products while contributing to carbon emission reduction at the village level,” said Ela Hasri Windari, S.Si., M.Sc.
Commitment to Sustainable Agriculture and Green Environment
Through this program, the Agroecotechnology Study Program, University of Bengkulu, reaffirms its commitment to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, especially in community service, by promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation across Bengkulu Province.
