Students who take this major are required to be able to understand the types of plant pests and their Latin names, types and symptoms of plant diseases due to viruses, fungi, bacteria and how to control them. The purpose of the Department of Plant Protection is to produce graduates who are professionals in the field of pest management and plant disease or plant protection.

History

Plant Protection Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Bengkulu University, was established on May 11, 2016 based on the Decree of the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 197/KPT/1/2016. The Plant Protection Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu is a reincarnation of the Study Program on Pests and Plant Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu which was established on February 23, 1998 based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 50/DIKTI/Kep/1998 which was then under the auspices of the Department of Plant Protection. since March 15, 2006 based on the Decree of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 36/D/O/2006. Furthermore, based on the Letter of the Director General of Higher Education No. 294/D/T/2010 dated March 18, 2010 regarding the merger of Agricultural Study Programs, since January 1, 2008 the Study Programs of Agronomy, Soil Science, and Plant Pests were merged into Agroecotechnology Study Programs.

Therefore, since 2008, lecturers of the Department of Plant Protection have implemented the Tri Dharma of Higher Education for Agroecotechnology Study Program students with an interest in Pests and Plant Diseases. On May 11, 2016, the Pests and Plant Diseases Study Program was born again with a new nomenclature (referring to the letter from the Director of Learning and Student Affairs of the Ministry of Education and Culture No. 0404/E3.2/2015 concerning Clumps of Science and Technology and College Graduate Degrees), namely Plant Protection Study Program based on the Decree of the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia No 197/KPT/1/2016.
