Welcome remark of The coordinator of Doctoral in Agricultural Sciences

The Doctoral in Agricultural Sciences (DAS) of the Faculty of Agriculture, The University of Bengkulu was founded in response to the lack of doctoral program in the field of agricultural sciences, particularly in western Indonesia.  DAS has an emphasis on the agricultural development for coastal areas in the tropics by taking into account the characteristics of the Bengkulu Province, which is on the west coast of the island of Sumatera.

Since the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education’s Decree No. 268/KPT/I/2019 about Permits for the Opening of Doctoral Program in Agricultural Science was published, the DAS has been put into operation.  DAS’s objective is scientific development in resolving agricultural issues in tropical coastal areas, with the scientific vision of “Producing internationally reputed doctors and innovations in the development of tropical agriculture in sustainable coastal areas by 2030. Profiles of graduates of the doctoral program are prepared based on the market demands as Decision Makers, Experts (Consultants), Lecturers or Researchers.

The implementation of DAS is supported by a number of lecturers of the Faculty of Agriculture or the University with eight lecturers, seven of whom are professors, assigned definitively in the study program.  With a high commitment, the entire academic community is determined to support DAS to become a doctoral study program that is known and recognized internationally.

  2. To produce international publications
  3. To produce technology that can overcome the problems of coastal areas
  4. To develop collaborative networks for the development of science and technology for sustainable tropical agriculture in coastal areas
  5. To carry out the quality assurance process in accordance with the procedures established by the University of Bengkulu.

Strategic plans to achieve these goals are:

  1. Selecting prospective students who have high academic abilities
  2. Developing a dynamic and adaptive curriculum for the development of science and technology
  3. Improving the quality of graduates in accordance with the needs of stakeholders
  4. Carrying out IPR-oriented research
  5. Publishing research results internationally
  6. Empowering communities based on local potential and the feasibility of available technology
  7. Establishing cooperation to gain recognition from domestic and foreign institutions
  8. Ensuring the implementation of DAS through the PPEPP process consistently and continuously.

In accordance with the geographical characteristics of the Bengkulu region which has a beach length of 525 km in the western part of Sumatra with a short landscape between the sea and mountains (about 40 km), as well as the availability of human resources from the Faculty of Agriculture, UNIB, the scientific excellence of DAS is focused on developing science and technology in the tropical agriculture sector of the coastal area. The coastal area, which is the interface between land and sea, has very complex characters, both in terms of function and characters. Indonesia has many islands, so it has a very wide coastal area. One of the characteristics of coastal areas is that they are the final terminal for the travel of both land and ocean wastes.

The characteristics of the Bengkulu coast which is facing the ocean are different from the character of the coastal area bordering the sea, strait, or bay. This difference in physical characters has a social impact, such as the difference in the characters of Bengkulu fishermen with the fishermen in other areas bordering the sea, bay, or strait, such as fishermen on the East Coast of Sumatra and the North Coast of Java. Another very serious challenge is the very high abrasion speed of the Bengkulu coast (northern part), so serious attention is needed in managing this area.

The advantage of the Doctoral in Agricultural Science at the University of Bengkulu is that it is the only study program that focuses on developing tropical agriculture for coastal areas. This is reflected in the courses and learning outcomes that focus on developing student expertise in various aspects of tropical agriculture in coastal areas. Based on these advantages, DAS offers 5 main studies (concentrations), namely

  1. Plant Breeding
  2. Crop Production
  3. Agricultural Resources
  4. Agricultural Economics
  5. Agribusiness Management
  6. Livestock Production
  7. Crop Protection
