Buledamber” Business Initiation to Kelompok Wanita Tani (Women Farmers Group) in Sukasari Village, Air Periukan District, Seluma Regency

Lecturers and Students of Agribusiness Study Programme Agricultural Socio-Economic Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Bengkulu University conducted the Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PPM) (Community Service Activity) in Sukasari Village. The activity team was chaired by Ir. Ellys Yuliarti, M.Si.,  assisted by Ir. Nyayu Neti Arianti, M.Si. as the team member, and also supported by a technical team Novia Febriyani, Ani Anggraini, and M. Fahmi Ramadhan. This activity was held on Sunday, October 23, 2022. The target of the activity was the Kelompok Wanita Tani (KWT) (Women Farmers Group) on Sukasari Village.

This activity aims to provide additional knowledge and skills about the Budidaya Lele dalam Ember (“Buledamber”) technique to KWT as the target audience. “Buledamber” is the technique to cultivate catfish in a bucket.  The benefits to be obtained from this activity are increasing awareness, willingness and ability of the target audience and the wider community in starting a household-scale “Buledamber” business, and efforts to improve household health and welfare. Besides being able to provide a source of nutritious food for families, “Buledamber” can also be an additional source of household income.

The “Buledamber” business is quite easy for KWT to implement, because the “Buledamber” technique does not require a large area of land, and the materials and tools used are easy to find. In addition, catfish have a good resistance in low oxygen levels. This makes it easier for people to try “Buledamber” in their backyard.

The activity began by delivering technical counseling on how to make “Buledamber” installation bucket and how to care the catfish and vegetables. “Buledamber” uses a 100 liter bucket which is then installed with a water faucet at the bottom of the bucket which is useful for draining if the water in the bucket is muddy or dirty.   The lid of the bucket is perforated in such a way as to place plastic cups. Plastic cups are used as containers for vegetable cultivation with hydroponic techniques utilizing water in a “Buledamber” bucket. The most suitable vegetable is water spinach.

The catfish can be harvested when they are 2 months old. Catfish that are still not ready to be harvested have to be cultivated until the next harvest. Catfish can be harvested about 2-3 months. Catfish harvests are not carried out simultaneously for all buckets because the size of catfish is not uniform.

Hopefully the knowledge and skills applied to KWT in Sukasari Village provide many benefits. The Learning by Doing method in this activity can make it easier for the target to understand the “Buledamber” technique. Thus they can be interested to apply “Buledamber” by themself.
