Lecturer of Agricultural Technology Department of Unib Utilizes Coffee Leaves into Herbal Tea Bags

On Saturday, May 4, 2024, community service activities were held in Babakan Bogor Village, Kabawetan District, Kepahiang Regency, Bengkulu Province. This community service activity was attended by villagers and officials of Babakan Bogor village. This activity was chaired by Dra. Devi Silsia, M.Si. with team members, namely Ir. Laili Susanti, M.Si. and Sri Wulandari, S.T.P., M.Sc.

The use of coffee leaves into herbal tea bags was conveyed by Dra. Devi Silsia, M.Si. In the delivery carried out, the understanding of coffee leaf herbal tea and the content in coffee leaves was conveyed.

Coffee leaf herbal tea or known as kawa leaf or kawa coffee is an herbal drink made from robusta or arabica coffee leaves. This drink is one of the typical Indonesian drinks originating from West Sumatra. Coffee leaves contain flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, caffeine, and polyphenols, among others. Phenolic acids are antioxidant compounds found in coffee leaves that function to eliminate free radicals in the body. Coffee leaves have antioxidant activity reaching 69.63%-70.63%, total phenol is high at 10.01%-11.53%, higher than green tea and black tea. The caffeine content is quite low compared to coffee from coffee beans which is 0.12% so that consuming coffee leaf tea does not cause nervousness.
