Field Practicum on Environmental Pollution and Environmental Management Analysis Held at Lake Gedang, Central Bengkulu
Central Bengkulu, May 24, 2025 — The Master’s Program in Natural Resource Management (PSDA), Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu, conducted a field practicum as part of the Environmental Pollution and Environmental Impact Analysis courses. The practicum was held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Lake Gedang, Central Bengkulu Regency.
This hands-on activity was designed to enhance students’ abilities to assess environmental quality—specifically soil and water conditions—and to analyze the impact of human activities on environmental pollution. The practicum was guided by Prof. Dr. Ir. Riwandi, MS., Dr. Agus Martono HP., D.E.A., Dr. Yurike, S.Pt., Prof. Dr. Ir. Urip Santoso, M.Sc. and Kartika Utami, SP., MSc.

The fieldwork covered two main components:
- Soil Quality Assessment
Students observed and scored key soil quality indicators in the field, including: Soil workability; Compaction and water infiltration; Erosion; Ground cover; Soil biological activity and organic matter; Plant growth and root development - Lake Water Quality Evaluation
Water quality was evaluated through:- Observation of physical conditions (color, odor, sediment)
- pH measurement using universal pH indicator strips
- Sediment quantification through sample filtration
- Identification of pollution sources and proposing conservation solutions

The practicum aimed to develop students’ psychomotor skills and sensitivity in identifying environmental symptoms caused by human actions, such as mining, intensive agriculture, and industrial or household waste. Students were also expected to interpret field results and propose sustainable environmental management recommendations.
“This practicum is crucial not only for academic learning but also for fostering awareness and practical skills in real-world environmental conditions. We expect our graduates to contribute actively to improving environmental quality in their communities,” said Prof. Urip Santoso at the end of the session.
