SOCIALIZATION OF CONSUMPTION OF LIVESTOCK PROTEIN IN MARGA SAKTI VILLAGE, PADANG JAYA, NORTH BENGKULU

On Sunday, May 13 2023, the community service team from the Animal Science Department, Bengkulu University  (Urip Santoso, Yosi Fenita and Muhammad Dani) conducted socialization on the consumption of animal protein from livestock. Consumption of animal protein from livestock is very important for human health. This protein source is rich in protein which is balanced in amino acids, minerals and vitamins. Protein requirement for adult humans is around 1 g/kg body weight. So if a person weighs 60 kg, then his daily protein requirement is 60 g. This need can be met with 25% protein of animal origin, which consists of 2/3 of fish protein and 1/3 of animal protein of livestock origin, and 75% of vegetable protein. So if the need is 60 g, then 15 g comes from animal protein. This animal protein is 2/3 of fish or equal to 10 g of fish and 5 g of livestock. Vegetable protein of 45 g per day. In Indonesia, it has been determined that the Indonesian population is recommended to consume a minimum of 6 g of livestock-derived protein per capita per day. This consumption target on average in Indonesia has been met and even exceeded the target. However, it turns out that there is still a very wide gap where there are regions that consume excessively and there are regions that still consume very little.

The unfulfilled consumption of animal origin from livestock in certain areas is caused by among others a lack of awareness of nutrition and/or low family income. For this reason, efforts to socialize the consumption of animal protein from livestock need to be encouraged. One way to increase family income is to provide alternative businesses. One of the businesses that was introduced in this socialization was the salted egg business whose manufacturing practice had been socialized by other Animal Science Department teams (Kusisiyah and Desia Kaharuddin). Another business alternative that was introduced was the meatball business (which is enriched with natural antioxidants in the form of senduduk leaves) (Suharyanto service team, Bieng Brata and Yurike). The introduction of another alternative business is the manufacture of organic fertilizers (Team Pengabdi Sutriyono, Endang Sulistyowati and Edi Soetrisno).

In this socialization, it was introduced that people can consume eggs because eggs are a relatively affordable source of protein. One egg can meet the needs of animal protein from livestock because consuming one chicken egg contributes as much as 6 g of protein. So, people can consume one chicken egg per day. People can reduce their cigarette consumption to be replaced by consuming chicken eggs.

The people of Marga Sakti Village were very enthusiastic about participating in this socialization, and were motivated to increase their consumption of protein from livestock. This socialization effort needs to be carried out periodically to increase public nutrition awareness.
