Marine Science Lecturer Conducts Community Service in Kahyapu Village, Enggano Island

MARINE SCIENCE UNIB | Lecturers of the Marine Science Study Program have carried out community service activities (PPM) in Kahyapu village, Enggano Island. PPM activities were carried out with the theme of Compact Development activities (Community Groups of Conservation Activists) in Coastal Vegetation Breeding and Integrated Beach Planting Actions on Pulau Dua, chaired by Mukti Dono Wilopo, S.Pi., M.Si., and Maya Angraini FU, S.Pi., M.Si, and Dr. Yar Johan, S.Pi., M.Si as members.

This activity took place in April 2021 by involving the people of Kahyapu village, Enggano island, and students to support the running of this PKM activity. Enggano as the outermost island needs assistance to overcome the problem of coastal abrasion by replanting mangroves. Mangrove forests are generally tropical coastal vegetation communities, which are dominated by several types of trees that can grow and develop in muddy coastal tidal areas. Some other functions of mangrove forests ecologically are as protection of coastal areas and small islands such as Enggano island which is located in the outermost area, reducing the occurrence of coastal abrasion and seawater intrusion, maintaining the presence of marine animal species and vegetation and can function as a sedimentation buffer.

This PKM activity began with socialization to the community about the importance of the existence of mangrove forests, especially in Kahyapu village, the activity continued with mangrove nurseries and mangrove replanting around Kahyapu village. With this activity, it is hoped that the community can better understand the function of the formation of a Conservation Activist Community Group in Kahyapu village and can be a point in supporting conservation activities.  The community can also carry out nursery activities and replanting coastal vegetation so that its sustainability is maintained as community participation in mangrove forest management efforts on Enggano island in general.
