Fostering Collaboration for Sustainable Eel Fisheries in Bengkulu

On December 23, 2024, the Marine Science Study Program at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu, hosted a visit from the SEAFDEC/IFRDMD delegation and the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension (RIIFE). The delegation was warmly welcomed by Dr Indra Cahyadinata, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Mr Zamdial, Head of the Marine Science Study Program, and a team of lecturers.

The discussion during the visit focused on exploring the potential of eels in Bengkulu, a region renowned for its rich aquatic biodiversity. The Marine Science Study Program was key in highlighting eels’ ecological and economic significance, emphasizing their importance as a valuable resource for local livelihoods and the global market.

In addition, the discussion addressed the development of conservation strategies aimed at protecting eel habitats, preventing overfishing, and establishing a sustainable management framework. The Marine Science Study Program underscored the importance of collaborative research and capacity-building initiatives, such as training programs for students and local communities, to integrate scientific knowledge with traditional practices.

Through this visit, the Marine Science Study Program is expected to become a catalyst in advancing sustainable fisheries management in Bengkulu while strengthening its role as a center of excellence in research and community empowerment in marine resource conservation and utilization.
