Marine Science Community Service Team of UNIB Conducts Waste Management Education in Pekik Nyaring Village
Central Bengkulu, October 15, 2025 – The Community Service Team from the Marine Science Study Program, University of Bengkulu, conducted an activity entitled “Waste Management Education for Coastal Communities” at the Community Learning Activity Center (BKBM) in Pekik Nyaring Village, Pondok Kelapa District, Central Bengkulu Regency.
The program aimed to raise awareness among coastal communities about the importance of proper and sustainable waste management in maintaining environmental cleanliness and preserving marine ecosystems.
The team consisted of Nella Tri Agustini, S.Kel., M.Si., Dr. Ir. Deddy Bakhtiar, M.Si., and Ana Ariasari, S.Pi., M.Sc. During the session, Dr. Ir. Deddy Bakhtiar, M.Si. served as the main speaker, delivering a presentation on the impact of waste on marine ecosystems and the application of the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in daily life.
“Waste management is not solely the responsibility of the government—it requires active participation from the community. It can start from households by sorting waste and reducing the use of single-use plastics,” explained Dr. Deddy.
The activity was conducted interactively and received enthusiastic participation from local residents and village officials. Participants were also guided through practical exercises on waste sorting and recycling to create useful and value-added products. Through this program, the Community Service Team hopes that the residents of Pekik Nyaring Village will become more aware of the importance of environmental cleanliness and serve as role models for other coastal communities in implementing responsible and sustainable waste management practices.
