Dissemination and Education on Integrated Waste Management to Improve Environmental Quality in Tourism Areas

This community service initiative was carried out in partnership with the Dewi Buiser Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) in the Lubuk Munik tourism area, North Bengkulu—a location with significant potential as a community-based nature tourism destination. While the rising number of tourists has positively impacted the local economy, it has also created environmental challenges, particularly regarding suboptimal waste management. This issue is a primary concern, as poorly managed waste can degrade environmental quality and visitor comfort, as well as threaten the long-term sustainability of the tourism area.

Through the program titled “Socialization and Education on Integrated Waste Management to Improve Environmental Quality in Tourism Areas,” the implementation team sought to enhance community knowledge, awareness, and participation in maintaining the cleanliness of the tourism site. Activities included outreach, education, practical training, and guidance for the community and the Dewi Buiser Pokdarwis on waste sorting, plastic waste reduction, and community-based waste management. The program leveraged the proposing team’s expertise in waste management and environmental education, gained through prior research and community service projects.

The initiative was structured in stages, encompassing planning, field observation, the delivery of outreach and training sessions, and program monitoring and evaluation. Beyond providing direct benefits to the community, the project aims to foster a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable tourism area. Through collaboration between the university, the local community, and the Dewi Buiser Pokdarwis, this program is expected to serve as a foundational step toward establishing a lasting culture of environmental stewardship in the Lubuk Munik tourism area.
