Community Service: Enrichment of Vegetation in the Coastal Area of Sungai Hitam, Bengkulu City

As part of the Tridarma of Higher Education, the Marine Science Study Program held a series of Community Service activities in 2022. This activity was carried out in Sungai Hitam Village, Beringin Raya Village, Bengkulu City.

High population growth, development activities, and land use changes (for cultivation, settlement, tourism, and others) in coastal areas can damage coastal areas. The damage to coastal regions can be characterized by the decreasing coastal vegetation in coastal areas and replacing them with man-made physical buildings. One way to reduce the impact of coastal damage is through vegetation enrichment activities in coastal areas.  For this, socialization-counseling activities and mangrove vegetation planting actions are needed to provide insight for the community group RT.07 Sungai Hitam Village about the function and role of coastal vegetation in the coastal environment.  Enrichment of coastal area vegetation is an effort to restore coastal ecosystems by planting plant species based on coastal land conditions. Vegetation rehabilitation of coastal areas can serve as environmental conservation, protection, or production.

This event was attended by 40 participants and was held on November 9, 2022, at the IKS meeting room of Sungai Hitam Village.  This service activity was carried out sequentially, starting from the presentation of material on Vegetation Enrichment of the Black River Village Beach Area, Beringin Raya Village, Bengkulu City (delivered by Mr. Ayub Sugara, S.Kel., M.Si. )  and continued the Mangrove Planting action by the Service team and community groups RT 07 Sungai Hitam Village.  This service activity can be the first step to growing public awareness of the importance of the function and role of coastal area vegetation, mainly mangroves. It can jointly take concrete actions in mangrove vegetation planting activities in the coastal area of Sungai Hitam Village.
