COMMUNITY SERVICE: CULTIVATION AND PACKAGING OF BSF MAGGOT

COMMUNITY SERVICE: CULTIVATION AND PACKAGING OF BSF MAGGOT

Lecturers in the Marine Science Study Program have successfully performed community service in Sungai Hitam Village (9/11). One of the services being carried out is ” Cultivation and Digital-Based Marketing of BSF Maggot Feed in Sungai Hitam Village”. This service is chaired by Dr. Yar Johan. The public’s enthusiasm for this service is very high. The community has practiced directly how to cultivate this fly and the larvae. High enthusiasm is shown because cultivation is relatively easy with relatively small capital, but has high economic value.

The BSF maggot is the larval stage of the Black Soldier Fly (BSF). This fly is black and large like a wasp. The fly, which has the Latin name Hermetia illucens, has many benefits for humans. BSF has a role in improving the environment because the larval phase of BSF (BSF maggot) consumes organic waste. BSF maggot can be used as animal feed because it contains high nutrition. These two benefits are the strong reason for the large number of BSF maggot cultivators, so they can sell it as animal feed.

In the service carried out by the lecturers of the Marine Science Study Program, we explain the steps for cultivating BSF maggot then also explain how marketing can be done. Packaging is certainly one of the important things in marketing a product. Good and attractive packaging will attract potential consumers to buy the products. Therefore, we provide training on BSF maggot cultivation and good marketing methods to the Sungai Hitam community.

To start a business, we certainly need capital. At this service, we are not only conducting a training, but we also provided several sets of cultivation tools to the local community so they could try and start this BSF maggot cultivation business independently. In addition, we also provide packaging (containers and stickers) so that the cultivation results can be marketed immediately. We also provide contacts person for further consultation during the trial period.
