Introduction to Marine Biota and Protecting Coastal Environments for a Secure Future: Protect the Sea, Protect Us
Indonesia has a vast water area, so it has a variety of marine biota that are very varied and interesting. The diversity of biota is utilized by the community to support human activities, such as food, and to maintain the stability and conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems. In order to maintain the sustainability of biota life in coastal and marine areas, public awareness is needed to protect the environment in coastal and marine areas, which is also supported by an understanding of marine biota diversity insights.
Lecturers of the Marine Science Study Program carried out community service activities to introduce marine biota diversity and awareness of protecting the environment at SDN 86 Beringin Raya, Bengkulu City, which is very important considering the situation in the area. As a school close to the coastal area, SDN 86 Beringin Raya, Bengkulu City, has great potential to understand and protect the marine environment. However, several challenges must be faced. Threats to the marine environment, such as plastic pollution, coral reef damage, and excessive fishing, are problems that require serious attention. In addition, students’ understanding of the diversity of marine biota around them may still be limited.
Through this activity, students can learn more closely about the various unique and essential species in the sea. This activity also aims to increase students’ awareness of protecting the coastal and marine environment. These students are expected to become agents of change who are responsible for maintaining environmental cleanliness and sustainability.
As an educational institution, SDN 86 Beringin Raya, Bengkulu City plays a pivotal role in shaping students’ attitudes and behavior towards the environment. By conducting this community service activity, the school can serve as a catalyst for environmental awareness and the preservation of marine biota diversity among students and the local community.
This activity is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills related to the diversity of marine biota and the importance of protecting the coastal and marine environment. The potential long-term impact of this activity is significant. By becoming environmental ambassadors who care and take responsibility, students can have a positive influence on society, including their families and friends, thereby contributing to a better future for our coastal and marine environment.
