Exploring the Mangrove Ecosystem: Marine Science Students Conduct Field Practicum on Food Chains in Kampong Bahari

Bengkulu, October 28, 2025 – The Marine Science Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu (UNIB), successfully conducted a crucial field practicum focused on marine ecosystems and food chains within the Kampong Bahari area of Pulau Baii, Bengkulu. The activity, held on October 28, 2025, involved all new students from the Class of 2025 and those enrolled in the Biology course.

This essential hands-on learning experience was specifically designed to introduce the new cohort to the complexities of coastal environments. Students were accompanied by the supervising Biology Course Lecturer and several Biology Course Assistants (Co-Ass), ensuring thorough guidance and instruction throughout the session. Located directly within the dense mangrove ecosystem, the practicum required students to directly observe and analyze the various components of the mangrove ecosystem and the intricate food chains present within this unique environment.

The students spent the day actively examining the flora and fauna unique to the mangrove habitat, understanding how the physical environment interacts with living organisms. They focused on identifying producers, consumers, and decomposers, and mapping out the energy transfer that constitutes the mangrove food web. This direct engagement aims to enhance the students’ theoretical understanding of Biology and ecology while developing essential fieldwork skills. Through this practical exercise, the Marine Science Study Program strengthens its commitment to providing an immersive, high-quality education that prepares students to become skilled marine scientists capable of analyzing and conserving valuable coastal resources.
